Cosmo From Basho & Friends

I love Cosmo, from Basho and Friends, this little charismatic dog gets students motivated to learn their alphabet, vowels, and basic syllables in Spanish. During the whole year, I play this video over and over for my students. I mainly use this as a method of learning the sounds and for basic letter recognition. Even now that the school year is almost over my students are very much still into this song.

El Mono Silabo: An Excellent Beginners Reading Resource

I really like El Mono Silabo, he goes over the "Silabas", by breaking down the initial sound and combining it then with a vowel. My pre-k students really enjoy doing this exercise. Afterwards, if you have followed the series or if your students have a good knowledge of "Silabas" they are able to then read along with El Mono Silabo, in reading basic sentences. Afterwards, Nicolo the Caveman will come out and do a silly song using the "Silaba". I am planning on linking in some of the videos from this series here, so please be patient with me as I get everything together.

Farm Animals

In our last unit, we were looking at different kinds of animals. We looked at the life cycle of insects, of humans, and mammals. When we discussed FARM ANIMALS, we looked at the different products that we get from farms animals. We in particular focused on the products we eat that come from Farm Animals. I will include an anchor chart, as well as some of the art projects that we did while coving this topic.

Transportation

A couple of weeks ago we did a unit on TRANSPORTATION, and we discussed the different types of transportation that students have experienced. We went over vocabulary, and continued on to the lesson. I personally really like to keep with a certain theme throughout the different subject areas we go over throughout the day. I found an excellent resource on of course teacherspayteachers.com! ( I will include the link at the bottom). This packet offered an awesome idea of making trains using the names of students. I in addition added that they number off the wheels, so that students get that extra practice to writing their numbers, and then pasting them in order. In the end, I put up their trains on my wall and created train of my own. I am hoping to improve next year, if I am still teaching Pre-K. I also will share with you the different anchor charts that I created for Transportation. The cool thing about this project is that obviously it can be done in English and Spanish.

All about Bees

In our last unit of Frog Street, we were looking at the different kinds of life cycles. As I have been trying to get my peers to collaborate more on producing items of the same theme, I assigned myself the Bee Life Cycle.
Students were introduced initially to the different kinds of bees that make up a bee colony. The Queen bee, the Drone bee, and the Worker bee, students were told about the duties each of these bees had. Afterwards, we went on to discuss the different stages bees go through as they grow, as we discuss the different stages students are labeling them on their worksheet. Finally, students colored in their bees, cut out the different sections and pasted them onto their yellow/ gold construction paper. I collected their work, and created a giant beehive.
When working on the Bee Life Cycle, I recommend this awesome freebie from TeachersPayTeachers.com The link is included on the bottom of the page! I am including a picture of the display I made for the hall using my students' work. Hope you all enjoy! Another plus about this packet is that it is ideal for bilingual students, as it includes worksheets in Spanish as well!

A Little About Borderland Teacher

So I would like to share a little about myself, I am currently living in El Paso, Texas. I am a fourth year teacher. In the past, I was teaching for Irving ISD, Texas but have now been teaching in Clint ISD.
I have taught in a bilingual classroom for the past four years, this year however is a bit different, I am teaching a monolingual class half day. This has been a new experience for me to say the least. I have taught, Kindergarten, GT 1st grade, and 2nd grade, currently I am teaching Pre-K. I am self contained but in the past I have done team teaching. On Thursday, they will tell me what my teaching assignment will be for next year, from what I have heard it will probably be a testing grade which is exciting and scary all at the same time.
The main purpose of my blog/ space here is to share what works for me, the different projects we are working on in class, and hopefully get ideas out there. Feel free to use whatever ideas you see, tweak them, change them, have fun with them. Ultimately, we are in education to teach our students, guide them, and inspire them to love learning.  We all have those teachers that left an ever lasting impression on us, hopefully we can continue that legacy though our students.

My very bright and thoughtful student Arlette made this drawing for good luck when I went to take my PPR.
